Vitamin D is an essential vitamin that helps regulate calcium in the body. It also plays a role in maintaining proper bone structure.

There are different forms of vitamin D including cholecalciferol. Vitamin D is found in fish, eggs, and fortified milk. It’s also made in the skin when exposed to sunlight. During periods of sunlight, vitamin D is stored in fat and then released when sunlight is not available.

Vitamin D supplements are commonly used to treat and prevent vitamin D deficiency. People who don’t get enough sun and people who are 65 years or older are at risk for deficiency. People also use vitamin D for weak and brittle bones, heart disease, asthma, hayfever and many other conditions, but there’s no good scientific evidence to support many of these uses.

It is important to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D. This can be done by taking 400-1000IU of vitamin D daily or spending 15-30 minutes in the sun each day.

During the autumn and winter, you need to get vitamin D from your diet because the sun is not strong enough for the body to make vitamin D.

Vitamin D is manufactured in many different forms so the patient can administer the medication in ways they feel comfortable in using, tablets, capsules, granules, drops, effervescent tablets and in liquid form.

Do not take more than 100 micrograms-
4,000IU of vitamin D a day as it could be harmful. This applies to adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding women and the elderly, and children aged 11 to 17 years.
Children aged 1 to 10 years should not have more than 50 micrograms-2,000IU a day. Infants under 12 months should not have more than 25 micrograms-1,000IU a day.
